Garrett Building Operating Room, Spring Grove State Hospital, around 1940

This operating room was located at the northeast corner of the third floor of the Garrett Building. Although it was used primarily for general surgery, prefrontal lobotomies were also performed here at the time that this picture was taken. This form of brain surgery was done through a close affiliation between Spring Grove, Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Phipps Clinic, Sinai Hospital (of Baltimore) and the University of Maryland Hospital. The nurse seen standing at the far right is wearing a cap that indicates that she was a graduate of the University of Maryland.
